The design challenge for this commission was to allow the play of light to invite you into the clients’ top floor patio deck. The commission is in a condominium complex in Kitsalano overlooking English Bay. Based on the California giant kelp species, Macrocystis pyrifera, this spiralled design is adorned with dichroic bubbles throughout the panel. Each kelp bulb is individually lensed, which causes the piece to “shimmer” as the viewer walks past. 

 

During a recent upgrade for water penetration issues the client decided to relocate this piece into a new custom-made interior door showing that the work can be re-purposed.
